Romain Kulczycki recalls the myth of Daedalus with a labyrinth of photographs

Kulczycki Romain Dèdalo 7

Romain Kulczycki is a French-born photographer from Lille (b.in 1984). After graduating in Sociology, he worked several years as a specialized teacher for minorities and refugees in France and Central America. During this time, as a self-taught photographer, he shot documentary projects in the Balkans, China and in the north of France. In 2018, he joined the Photography and Visual Design Master at NABA in Milan, Italy.

Influenced by social sciences and literature, Kulczycki is interested in urban reality and the questions linked to the territories. He focuses on the mutations that take shape and the identities attached to it, trying to keep a personal esthetic and an instinctive approach.

About ‘Dèdalo’– words by Romain Kulczycki:

The title of this series refers to the mythological character Daedalus, Athenian artist and engineer who built the labyrinth of Minos from which he managed to escape after being locked up with his son Icarus. In French, “les dédales” also refer to a series of tortuous paths in which one loses all sense of direction.

Compared to my earlier projects – where I used to always work on a relation to a specific place or population – ‘Dèdalo’ appears to be as a deconstruction, a counter-current series because where the location is not specified. Also, it is intended to be a collection of subjective representations rather than documents.
This is a work of re-editing latent images, carried out between 2016 and 2019 in various cities of Europe such as Marseille, Rome, Milan, Glasgow, Tirana, Athens, or Skopje…

Different spaces united by a common ‘urban fact’ that is the common thread of ‘Dèdalo’: a steep, decadent and narrow city, in which one advances blindly and allows himself to be disoriented.
