Katarina Juričić explores emotional relationships with her environment

Katarina Juricic (1994, CRO) is an artist and researcher on photography, constantly seeking for new forms to embody photography and explore its physicality. After receiving a BA in Journalism at Faculty of Political Science in Zagreb, she is moving to The Hague to pursue a photography study at Royal Academy of Art.

Katarina approached photography as a very intuitive and spontaneous act, enriching his portfolio with visual diaries, and portraits of her time and the procedure of developing a relationship with the environment around her.

“We see, think and live in images. And more often than not, images we encounter are digital and therefore immaterial, yet we accept them as real.” Taking this paradox as a starting point for her work, Juricic uses digital photography as a tool to visualize the equally intangible but more mysterious concept of human memory.

Driven by the urge to re-establish a physical connection with the world around her, the final form of her work are site-specific installations built upon extensive material research in which light, colors, materials and motifs from the photographic work into the space and create a living image.

Her work was shown at Unseen and Melkweg Expo in Amsterdam, Nest and Grey Space in the Middle in The Hague, among others.

About ‘Home Seack’:

Home Seack is one of the chapters in my ongoing research which brings together materialization of memory and physicality of photography.

The very common state of coexistence in several places at once, both physically and virtually, became a subject of my study which I explore in a variety of forms. In Home Seack, I stage compositions with objects and places encountered during the stay on the island of Brac. Motives are abstract associations I have with the island and represent my idea of home.

Summers are when I actually go back home and switch back to Croatian state of mind. There is this feeling I have every time I arrive on Brac. I feel relieved. With the series, I’m evoking this same feeling again. But, being far away from the island turns relief into homesickness, which in my case becomes homeseackness.
