About ‘5-8pm in Bakersfield’:
I remember back in the day when people were very honored to get their photo taken. It was one of the most rewarding parts of being a photographer. Living in LA almost 15 years now and with everyone being a photographer due to i phone and Instagram, you cant get further from that idea. When you ask to take someone’s photo most people are offended that you want to invade their privacy.
Maybe thats the world or maybe its just this town….They ask what blog it’s going to be on because yes all people that take photographs are bloggers in the publics eye or someone that’s Instagram famous. And people expect to get paid by getting their photo taken on the street which takes away from the idea of documenting moments in time and street photography.
A few years ago I was working on a country music video for Jaime Wyatt in Bakersfield California and while being there I was re inspired to how fun it was to take photographs of people and their surrounding areas. The people there were so kind and open and wanted to get their photo taken and I remembered that awarding feeling what it was like to be a photographer again in the most recent years.
These images are a series of people living around Bakersfield and the things they like to do for fun. It’s showcasing the people they love and who they are friends with. They were mostly photos shot in the summer and the light was best between 5 to 8 PM so that’s where the title came from because that’s when most of the photos were taken. I want to go back and continue photographing people there as they are so kind and open and it makes me excited about just walking down the street with my camera because everything is amusing there.
