Julian speaks about himself:
“My name’s Julian Caldwell, I’m twenty years old and I’m a Bristol bred amateur photographer, now living in London. I first started taking photos shooting on a digital entry-level DSLR, and maintained doing so throughout my studies due to the convenience and school-friendly ‘experimentation’ capabilities of digital. It wasn’t until I found a mint condition Olympus Mju-ii in a charity shop that I would discover the world of film photography, and effectively retire my DSLR for good.”
About ‘Street Files Los Angeles’:
Upon leaving school, I instantly began working full time in a kitchen, saving up for a trip I’d been wanting to make for a long time, and in March of last year – inspired by a conflicting mix of nostalgia and curiosity, I found myself on a flight to Los Angeles. Awaiting me there was a job working in a chain of hostels that offered food and accommodation in return for half a week’s work.
Over the course of ten weeks I used my time away from the hostel to explore the balmy, gritty, contradictory character of the city – and document it all on my Fuji GS645S & trusty Olympus Mju I (a replacement from my original charity shop find). What I found would quench my nostalgic thirst, but barely make a dent in the curiosity that drove me there in the first place. If anything, I left more inquisitive about the city and it’s different ways of life than when I arrived, without anything close to a definitive picture of the city.
What I did leave with was this set of pictures which follows my exploration of the city, and attempt to make sense of it.
